Why DVR is better than VHS?
The importance of a good recording system is apparent to the end-user after a major event occurs. The failure of a tape-based system is usually discovered when a security incident is reviewed, for example if the image quality does not allow for a clear identification or you discover that the system has not recorded at all!

Previous method for recording CC-TV on tape with tape-recording equipment is an analog type. Therefore, it is very inconvenient to change the tapes frequently and it lowers the quality of image.
However, a Digital Video Recorder or DVR, digitally records the video image so it provides clear image like a picture. It also has a function to record continuously so you don't have to worry about the frequent change of tapes. DVR, therefore, is a video recording surveillance system for the next generation and it is growing very rapidly.

DVRs offer advantages traditional tape-based time-lapse VCRs cannot. DVRs allow live remote viewing and playback of recorded surveillance video via any Local Area Network (LAN) or the Web. And there's no tape to catalog and store. The ability of DVR-based systems to record and play back events at the same time, rather than having to stop a standard tape and rewind it when searching for an incident, is also an advantage.

What is the cost effective difference?
DVRs are more expensive than VCRs. However, the DVR prices have fallen considerably over the last year Already, low-end DVRs and high-end VCRs are in similar price ranges, and most manufacturers have stopped introducing new VCR models. Despite the increased cost, we recommend CCTV system buyers purchase a DVR whenever possible because tape based technology is on the way out and soon will not be supported by manufacturers – supplies and replacement parts will be harder and harder to acquire.

What features do DVRs offer?
DVRs offer so many advantages over VCRs that they have rapidly taken over as the surveillance monitoring/recording solution of choice:
Ease of locating events - Instead of fast-forwarding through hours of tape, DVRs can instantly retrieve images from any specific time or date, or automatically skip to the point on a recording when something changed.

Storage quality - Like all tapes, video cassettes start deteriorating almost immediately once you record on them - and the problem gets worse every time you reuse them. DVR recordings have no degradation at all since they are stored onto a hard drive.
Multitasking - While analog VCRs can either record or play, most DVRs can do both at the same time, letting you review images while still recording.

The digital video system that will work best for your application will depend on 3 factors:

  1. The number of cameras you require

  2. The frames per second that you need

  3. Whether you desire remote viewing

  4. "The advantages of DVR systems are quickly being realized by a variety of businesses and industries. DVR systems eliminate the hassles associated with analog CCTV Systems of having to change videotapes frequently."
